Description

This is an earlier 19th century house with later 19th century and modern additions, located at 22 Minto Street, Edinburgh. The main house is a two-storey, three-bay symmetrical building in a classical style. It is adjoined to the north, south, and east by two-storey wings. The house is constructed of cream sandstone ashlar, with the north side being harled. A base course runs along the front, and a cill course is present beneath the architraved windows on the first floor. A cornice and blocking course are raised at the centre of the building.

The west-facing (entrance) elevation features a central doorway with a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight above. Flanking the doorway are Ionic columns supporting a pedimented doorpiece, and a single window is positioned above the doorpiece on the first floor. Advanced, corniced tripartite windows are located on the ground floor to the outer left and right, with single windows above them on the first floor. The two-storey wing to the south has a single-storey section to the west and a two-storey section to the rear, with three bays at ground level and two bays on the first floor. The wing includes a base course, cornice, and blocking course, and features an advanced central bay at ground level with Doric pilasters framing a blind, round-arched panel. A pedestrian gateway is set within the round-arched panel to the outer right, and a round-arched window is present in the bay to the outer left. The first floor of the south wing has single windows in each bay. The two-storey north wing has a base course, string course, dividing band course, a cill course to the first floor windows and cornice and blocking course. A full-height advanced central panel on this wing contains a single round-arched window on the ground floor and a single architraved window on the first floor.

The north-facing (Grantully Place) elevation has a single, central window on both the ground and first floors. The east-facing (Grantully Place) elevation incorporates a modern door, a tripartite stair window above, and full-height canted windows in the flanking bays. The two-storey wing to the north has single windows on both floors.

The east wing has a four-bay north elevation, with a doorway to the outer left and a single window to the first floor above, as well as to both floors in the remaining bays. The east elevation of this wing has a tripartite window on both the ground floor and the first floor, with a deep bracketed cill and a cast iron balustrade below the first-floor window.

The majority of the windows are timber sash and case with plate glass, though some modern pivot windows are present. The roofs are grey slate, piended in shape, with corniced wallhead stacks and moulded cans. The interior of the house was not inspected in 1996.

Low, coped boundary walls are present along the street, with a higher rubble wall to the south terminating in a pier with a decorative cap and replacement railings.
