Description
Kilmartin Primary School, designed by James G Davis and dated 1840, is a single-storey building with an attic, featuring a near-symmetrical gabled design. The exterior is constructed from snecked rubble with cherry caulking and ashlar dressings, showcasing window margins, hoodmoulds, quoin strips, and overhanging bracketed eaves.
The entrance elevation includes a broad five-bay boarded timber porch at the center, which has a doorway flanked by two windows on each side, all beneath a half-pitched slate roof. Above the porch, there is a gabled ashlar dormer that breaks the eaves, with a cast-iron rooflight to the right. Taller, single gabled bays are located on either side of the porch; the right bay has a window at both the ground and attic levels, while the left bay features a canted window with ashlar mullions at the ground level and an inscribed plaque above the attic window. A window is set in a recessed bay on the far left, and the outer right side has a doorway and two windows, with a flat-roofed dormer above.
Both side elevations are characterized by a four-light mullioned and transomed window at the ground level, with a loop below the apex. The rear elevation is asymmetrical, featuring gabled bays and a modern flat-roofed extension. It has fixed small-pane timber framed windows with top hoppers, and some windows are fitted with timber casements. The roof is covered with grey slate, and the building has mostly rendered surfaces with coped stacks, including a tall corniced sandstone stack at the rear with an offset base.
The boundary wall surrounding the property is made of rubble and features a semi-circular coping.
