Description
This is a later 19th-century building, constructed after 1865, originally a Gothic school building, now serving as a community centre in Kilcreggan. It is a single-story, L-shaped structure incorporating a hall with a transept and a porch, alongside a modern addition at the north end. The exterior is built from rubble stone with ashlar margins and dressings. The windows are round-headed, featuring chamfered reveals.
The east elevation showcases the main body of the school, punctuated by a gabled transept approximately midway along. A porch is nestled in the re-entrant angle to the left, with a lower bay extending to the outer right, creating the L-shaped plan with the transept. A modern gabled addition, sympathetic in style, is situated on the outer right. The main body of the school has three bays to the outer left, with a slightly advanced, shouldered wallhead stack centrally placed, flanked by round-headed windows. The gabled porch features a round-headed, chamfered door with a two-leaf, boarded door, and a plaque commemorating the generosity of Mr and Mrs Carne Campbell from the Free Church congregation of Rosneath, dated 1850. The transept’s gable includes a large three-light window. A lower gabled block to the right has a single window on its east elevation; its gable end, which previously faced north, is now largely hidden by the modern block, which unfortunately employs dry-dash rendering and reconstituted stone.
The west elevation is five bays wide, with windows arranged in a bipartite, single, tripartite, single, bipartite pattern. A small, lead-covered, triangulated ventilation dormer and a lead ridge ventilator are also present.
The south elevation displays a gable with a three-light window and a hoodmould, along with an ashlar gabled bellcote, sawtooth coping, and a trefoil finial. The transept is recessed to the right, with a porch in the re-entrant angle. The north elevation has a blocked door at its centre.
The building features leaded windows, with plate glass used in the lower panes of the west elevation. The roof is covered in grey slate with lead flashings and sawtooth ashlar coping. An ashlar octagonal can with a large octagonal cap tops a shouldered wallhead stack on the east elevation, while a tall yellow brick stack stands on an ashlar pedestal on the transept.
The interior was not inspected during a 1993 survey.
The site is bounded by a rubble wall with harl pointing and boulder coping along the north side. A low ashlar plinth wall with simple railings runs along School Road. Harled drum piers with semicircular caps serve as gate piers.
