School House, Kingarth, Bute

The School House in Kingarth, Bute, is a former schoolhouse built in the earlier to mid 19th century. It features a near-symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay design in a plain classical style, with a single-storey, two-bay addition on the outer left and a recessed single-bay addition on the outer right. A bowed stair tower is centered at the rear. The exterior is finished in harl with painted margins, strip quoins, and projecting cills.

On the entrance elevation, there are steps leading up to a timber panelled door that is centered at the ground level, topped by a plate-glass fanlight. A single window is aligned above on the first floor, and the bays to the left and right are regularly fenestrated. The two-bay addition on the outer left has single windows, while the outer right features a blind bay that is recessed.

The rear elevation includes a stair window centered in the bowed tower, with regular fenestration in the bays to the outer left and right. The ground floor features two- and ten-pane timber sash and case glazing, while the remaining openings have uPVC glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, with replacement rainwater goods. There are corniced wallhead stacks at both the north and south ends, along with various circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1996. The site is enclosed by a boundary wall made of random rubble with round-arched coping.
