Description

The Scottish Lime Centre Trust, located at 4 Rocks Road in Charlestown, is a former school house built in the later part of the 19th century. This two-storey building features three bays, with an advanced gabled bay on the far right. The exterior is harled, with ashlar surrounds to the openings and quoins. It has corniced bargeboards on the gables, dormers, a porch, and decorative timber finials.

On the west elevation, there is a central door with a 2-pane fanlight and an advanced porch that includes a decorative finial and pendant, supported by chamfered timber on stone bases. Flanking the door are bipartite windows with corbelled hoodmoulds and ashlar mullions. The first-floor windows are centered above the ground floor windows and door. To the left, there is a breaking eaves dormer window, and to the right, a first-floor window. The central dormer window is round-headed and sits wholly in the roof, with a decorative timber pendant and finial at the right gable apex.

The north elevation features a plain gable wall with a decorative timber pendant and finial at the apex. There is a section set back to the left with a plain wall. The east elevation has a section set back to the right with a plain wall, while the advanced section in the center and left has a central gable. This section includes a central door, a narrow window to the right, a window to the left, and a mid-floor stair window above the right of the door.

On the south elevation, there is a single ground and first-floor window with a gabled top, and a decorative timber pendant and finial at the apex. A plain section is located to the left.

The building predominantly features 4-pane timber sash and case windows and has a steeply pitched slated roof with exposed rafters at the eaves. There are corniced ridge stacks on the north and south gables.

The interior was not seen in 2000. Surrounding the property is a tall rubble wall that encloses the land to the north, east, and south, incorporating a single-storey structure in the southeast corner. A low wall runs in front of the house to the west.
