Description
12 North Row in Charlestown is a row of six symmetrical single-storey cottages, dating from the later 18th century to the early 19th century. The two central cottages have attics, and brick upper storeys were added around 1850. The exterior is made of rendered sandstone, with pebble dash on number 11.
The south elevation features three symmetrical bays, each with a central door and flanking windows. The west elevation has a plain gable, while the north elevation includes some contemporary rear wings and modern extensions. The east elevation has a window in the gable wall.
The cottages have 2-pane sash and case windows at numbers 8 and 9, while numbers 7, 11, and 12 have replacement windows. Box windows flank the central front door of number 10, which is covered by a continuous canopy that forms a porch. Number 9 has two pitched dormer windows, and number 10 has two flat-headed dormer windows. The cottages have a continuous piended slate roof, which is interrupted by raised pitched slate roofs on numbers 9 and 10, with slate laid in diminishing courses. There is a single shared ridge stack for numbers 7 and 8, gable apex stacks for numbers 9 and 10, a shared central ridge stack, and a gable end stack for number 12.
The interiors were not seen in 2000.
