Description
1 North Row in Charlestown is a row of cottages built in the later 18th century to early 19th century, arranged in an L-plan. The row consists of five single-storey cottages and one single-storey cottage with an attic, with a brick upper storey added in the 1850s. The cottages are predominantly three bays, except for the two-bay configuration of the L-plan cottage at 2 Charlestown Village. The exterior is finished in rendered sandstone.
The south elevation, which faces 3-6 Charlestown Village, features three windows to the left (two at 2 Charlestown Village) and a central door flanked by windows. There is a piended porch at 3 Charlestown Village. Box windows are located beside the central door, and there are two pitched dormer windows at 4 Charlestown Village.
The east elevation has a plain gable wall. The north elevation includes some modern single-storey rear extensions, along with some contemporary piended extensions.
The west elevation, which is the principal elevation for 1-2 Charlestown Village, has a north outshot at 1 Charlestown Village, with a canted bow window to the left of the front door and a single window to the right. At 2 Charlestown Village, there are two windows to the left of the front door and a single window to the right.
The interiors were not seen as of 2000. The windows are predominantly two-pane timber sash and case, with exceptions for box and bay windows. The windows at 6 Charlestown Village have been enlarged, and there is a rooflight at the front of 4 Charlestown Village, with modern windows at the rear. The cottages have a continuous piended slate roof, which is interrupted by a raised pitched slate roof at 4 Charlestown Village. There are two gable end stacks at 4 Charlestown Village and a total of five ridge stacks elsewhere.
