Description
The High Kirk Mausoleum in Townhead, Rothesay, Bute, is a late 18th-century structure designed as a single-storey mausoleum with a rectangular plan. It features a single bay at both the front and rear, and two bays on the sides. The exterior is finished with whitewashed harl and weathered red sandstone dressings. It has a sandstone base course, a raised lintel course beneath corniced eaves, and broken architraved pediments on the east and west sides. The mausoleum is adorned with symmetrically placed panelled obelisk pinnacles and ornamental urn-shaped finials.
On the west elevation, which serves as the entrance, there is a boarded timber door at the center, framed by flanking pilasters and a rectangular panel above, topped with a segmental-arched pediment. An armorial panel is set in a projecting medallion at the apex, with an urn-shaped finial above. The outer corners feature advanced clasping pilasters with tapering pinnacles above.
The north side elevation has two bays, with an advanced pilaster at the center and a tapering pinnacle above. The outer corners also have advanced clasping pilasters, with blind bays in between. The rear elevation features a central window with Y-tracery, architraved mullions, flanking fluted pilasters, a projecting cill, and a segmental-arched pediment, with an urn-shaped finial above. The outer corners again have advanced clasping pilasters and tapering pinnacles.
The south side elevation mirrors the north side with two bays, an advanced pilaster at the center, tapering pinnacle above, and advanced clasping corner pilasters, with blind bays in between. The mausoleum is topped with a grey slate roof and raised skews. The interior was not seen in 1996.
