Description
This is a mid to later 19th-century flatted house, with alterations and additions made in the mid to later 20th century. The house is asymmetrical in design, standing three stories high with three bays at the front and rear. A prominent full-height five-light bow window is situated on the outer left side, while a bowed stair tower is located at the rear, adjoining later lean-to additions.
The exterior is primarily painted coursed rubble sandstone, with painted render dressings and corniced eaves. The windows are a mix of basket-arched at ground and first floor levels, and square-headed at the second floor. They have painted render surrounds, decorative cast-iron columnar mullions, and projecting cills. The side elevations are of harl-pointed rubble sandstone, with a harled second-floor addition at the rear and whitewashed rubble additions. A single-story, two-bay pitched outbuilding is located to the northwest.
The entrance elevation, facing east, features a centered, part-glazed timber panelled door with a plate-glass fanlight in a round-arched surround. A decorative, round-arched timber canopy, complete with a decorative bargeboard and consoled finial, shelters the entrance. Single windows are aligned at the first and second floors. Tripartite windows are found at ground and first floor levels on the outer right bay, with a bipartite window positioned above. The outer left bay features the five-light bowed windows across all three floors.
The rear, or west, elevation has single windows at ground and first floor levels on the right-hand bay. A part-stained stair window is centered in the bowed tower, which is offset to the right of centre. Lean-to additions fill the remaining bays to the left, with single windows unevenly disposed on the second floor.
Original timber sash and case windows with two panes remain on the first floor. Replacement windows are present at ground and second floor levels. The rear stair tower has a part-stained, opaque-glazed window. The original pitched roof was altered to accommodate an additional second floor. Corniced wallhead stacks rise to the north and south, surmounted by various octagonal cans.
The rear stair, accessible through a timber panelled door from the ground floor at the southern re-entrant angle, is a communal space with timber treads, decorative cast-iron uprights, a timber handrail, and a large stair window set within a chamfered recess. It provides access to three flats from the first floor. The interior of the property was not inspected in 1996.
The east elevation of the outbuilding features a single window offset to the left and a single door offset to the right, topped by a graded grey slate roof.
A coped, whitewashed render boundary wall runs along Ardbeg Road, punctuated by corniced square-plan piers on the outer left and right sides. A replacement cast-iron pedestrian entry gate provides access to the ground floor flat.
