Description

35 Argyle Terrace is a pair of semi-detached houses built in the mid to later 19th century. These two-storey homes with an attic are designed in a classical style and feature a symmetrical layout. They are constructed from coursed yellow sandstone ashlar with raised ashlar dressings, including a raised base course and a lintel course beneath the moulded eaves. The houses have pilastered quoins, corniced and architraved surrounds to the ground floor windows, corbelled cills, plain surrounds at the first floor, and projecting cills. The door surrounds are also corniced and pilastered, while the sides of the buildings are finished in random rubble.

On the entrance elevation, there are steps leading to timber panelled doors that are centrally located at the ground level, topped with quadripartite fanlights and pilastered surrounds. There are single windows in the outer bays at the ground level, and the first floor is regularly fenestrated. Each house has a centrally located bipartite box-dormer.

The windows are predominantly two-pane timber sash and case, although there is modern glazing at the ground level of No 33. The roof is covered with graded grey slate and features raised stone skews. There is a corniced sandstone ridge stack at the center, a coped apex stack to the north that is rendered, and a corniced apex stack to the south made of sandstone, along with various circular chimney cans.

The interiors were not seen during the last inspection in 1996. There is also a single-storey outbuilding to the south of No 33, which is piended and rectangular in plan, constructed from random rubble with tooled rubble dressings and a grey slate roof that includes a rooflight. Additionally, there is a coped random rubble boundary wall along Argyle Terrace.
