1 Argyle Place, Rothesay, Bute

1 Argyle Place is an early 19th-century, symmetrical, two-storey house with an attic and basement, designed in a plain classical style. It forms a pair with the adjacent No 2. The house is constructed from painted coursed rubble sandstone with raised, painted margins. It features a raised base course, a lintel course beneath the corniced eaves, and a blocking course. The building has pilastered quoins, a corniced and consoled doorpiece, and projecting cills.

On the east elevation, there is a decorative cast-iron balustraded stair leading to the central entrance, which includes a replacement two-leaf timber panelled door and a geometric-patterned fanlight. The doorpiece is surrounded by flanking pilasters and consoled brackets beneath a cornice. There are single windows at the ground and basement levels in the outer left and right bays, and the first floor is regularly fenestrated. A three-bay box-dormer is centered above.

The house has modern glazing throughout and a graded grey slate roof with raised skews. There is a corniced apex stack to the south and a corniced ridge stack to the north, along with various circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1996. The property is bordered by a low coped random rubble wall along Argyle Place.
