Municipal Pavilion, Argyle Street, Rothesay, Bute

This is an entertainment pavilion designed by James Carrick and dated 1938, following a competition win in 1936. It is an example of the International Style. The building has a basement and two storeys, with a distinctive fully-glazed, bowed wing extending to the outer left, which cantilevers over a recessed, bowed, glazed vestibule. A cantilevered canopy shelters a terrace on the second floor. The exterior is finished in light buff-coloured synthetic stone, intended to resemble ashlar, with raised base, string, and eaves courses, and flat roofs.

The main (east) elevation features a central entrance with a pair of part-glazed timber doors, flanked by side lights and a replacement fanlight. To the right of the entrance are single windows across five bays. A full-width glazed sun lounge occupies the first floor, and a projecting stair tower is offset to the right of the centre, featuring a timber door at ground level, a tall stair window above, and a bipartite basement window. Tripartite windows are found at both the first and second floors. To the left of the entrance are two single windows, above which is a cantilevered terrace. The bowed vestibule on the outer left has three sets of glazed timber doors to the north, and multi-paned plate-glass fanlights. A bowed cafe is located on the first floor above the vestibule, topped by a cantilevered canopy. The building incorporates modern horizontal glazing, which is partially opaque at ground level. A large, tapering flag-pole extends above the overhanging terrace.

Inside, the refurbished interior includes a set of three glazed timber doors with flanking side lights and quadripartite fanlights, leading to a bowed timber kiosk. Angular stairs ascend to the first floor, where a terrazzo-coloured floor features abstract geometric designs. A large ballroom has a long proscenium opening. A first-floor cafe is located in the bow on the outer left.

A two-storey, flat-roofed house is situated to the rear of the pavilion and was converted into a nursery in the late 20th century. It is harled, with corniced eaves, projecting cills, and glazing similar to the pavilion. The northwest elevation of the house features a central part-glazed timber door, stylised pilasters, single windows, and a cantilevered canopy. The northeast (side) elevation has single windows on both floors. A coped central stack and a circular can are visible on the flat roof.

A low, coped, curved boundary wall made of random rubble sits along Argyle Street.
