2 Academy Terrace, Academy Road, Rothesay, Bute

This is a group of six houses forming a symmetrical, gabled terrace built in the earlier 20th century on a sloping site in Rothesay, Bute. The terrace is comprised of numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, with numbers 1, 2, 5 and 6 being two storeys high, and numbers 3 and 4 being three storeys high. The exterior is whitewashed harl with half-timbering to the first floor of the front elevation. The base course is raised, as are string courses, and there are overhanging, bracketed eaves. Raised margins and projecting cills are present, along with bracketed canopies to the front and rear.

The northeast (entrance) elevation features a timber panelled, two-leaf door centrally positioned on numbers 3 and 4, with a bipartite fanlight and a bracketed canopy. Single windows are aligned at the first floor. Canted, three-light windows are present at ground and first floor levels in the left and right outer bays respectively, and tripartite windows are centred in the gable peaks. Flanking wings (numbers 1 & 2 and 5 & 6) also feature centrally positioned, two-leaf timber panelled doors (a replacement door at number 6), bipartite fanlights and overhanging bracketed porches. Single windows are aligned at the first floor, and canted, three-light windows are located at ground floor in the outer left and right bays. Bipartite windows are centred in the first floor apex of numbers 1, 2, 5 and 6 (a replacement single window at number 5).

The southwest (rear) elevation is arranged with a complex pattern of bays: 1-4-1-1-4-1-1-4-1. A four-bay lean-to projection is centred at ground level on numbers 3 & 4, featuring replacement doors, a bracketed canopy and single windows at first floor. Replacement single windows are located at ground level in the bays to the left and right, and bipartite windows are positioned above. Recessed bays at the outer left and right have single windows at both ground and first floor levels. Centred in the ball-finialed gables are two single windows at differing levels. Cat-slide roofs are centred in the flanking wings (numbers 1 & 2 on the right and numbers 5 & 6 on the left); these include replacement doors, bracketed canopies and single windows aligned at the first floor. Bipartite openings at ground level are located at numbers 2, 5 and 6 - a replacement single window is visible at number 1. Bipartite windows are placed above. Recessed bays at the outer right and left contain single windows on both floors.

The windows are predominantly timber sash windows with four and six panes of stained glass at the top and plate glass at the bottom; replacement glazing is noted at numbers 1, 3, and on the first floor of number 5. Further replacement glazing is present at the rear. Various rooflights are visible. The roof is covered with grey slate, having raised skews and terracotta ridge detailing. Coped harled ridge and apex stacks feature circular terracotta cans. The interiors were not inspected in 1996.
