Description
This is a mid-19th century house, later converted into two flats during the early 20th century. The asymmetrical design is two storeys with a three-bay front, alongside a single-storey, single-bay addition to the outer left and a slightly projecting gabled bay to the outer right. Stairs are located at the rear, providing access to the upper flat. The exterior is finished in painted harl with raised, painted margins and painted strip quoins. A raised band course sits at the principal floor level, while corniced canted windows are present at ground level. The eaves overhang, and chamfered openings are surrounded by painted details. Moulded timber shafts adorn the gables. A single-storey, four-bay, L-shaped outbuilding, formerly stables, is located at the rear, constructed from whitewashed sandstone rubble.
The northeast elevation, facing the High Road, has a decorative cast-iron balustraded staircase leading to a ground floor entrance, offset to the right of centre, a timber panelled door, and a plate-glass fanlight. A single gabled window breaks the eaves at first-floor level, centred above the staircase. A three-light canted window is at ground level in the penultimate bay to the outer left, accompanied by a single gabled window breaking the eaves at first floor. A single window is present at ground level in the outermost bay. The advanced gabled bay to the outer right features three-light canted windows on both floors, centred beneath the apex.
The southwest (rear) elevation showcases a decorative cast-iron balustraded staircase leading to a boarded timber lean-to addition at first-floor level (accessing the upper flat). A single window is at ground level, offset to the left of centre, with single windows on both floors in the bay to the outer left; the first-floor window breaks the eaves. A piended, single-storey projection provides rear access to the ground floor flat, accompanied by single windows on both floors, with the first-floor window breaking the eaves. A single window is located at ground level in the outermost bay.
The windows are a mix of 6- and 12-pane lying-pane glazing to both the front and rear. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, with replacement rainwater goods. There are coped apex stacks on the northwest and southeast sides, with various octagonal cans.
The interior was adapted around 1916 to create ground and first-floor flats. The entrance features engraved glass set within a timber panelled door, an architraved surround, and a plate-glass fanlight. Original features include plaster cornice work, timber skirting boards, and timber panelled doors.
The outbuilding has single boarded timber doors in two bays to the right of centre. A pitched wing to the outer left features a timber panelled door in the penultimate bay and a single window to the far left, alongside a boarded timber hay-loft hatch centred beneath the apex. It also has overhanging timber eaves, a graded grey slate roof and replacement rainwater goods.
A coped, harl-pointed rubble boundary wall runs along Ardbeg Road, flanked by whitewashed, square-plan piers with pyramidal caps. A boarded timber pedestrian gate provides entry.
