Description
18-19 Ardbeg Road is a symmetrical, two-storey building with an attic, dating from the earlier to mid-19th century, and has been converted into flats in the mid-20th century. This plain classical style house is one of a pair and features entrances at both the front and rear. The exterior is made of painted rubble sandstone with raised, painted margins and painted strip quoins. It has a raised base course and a lintel course beneath the corniced eaves, along with a pilastered doorpiece and projecting cills. The sides and rear are finished in harl-pointed random rubble, and there is an exterior stair, partly made of sandstone and partly of red brick, located at the rear.
On the entrance elevation, there are steps leading to a part-glazed, two-leaf timber panelled door that is centered at the ground level, accompanied by a bipartite fanlight. The door is framed by a corniced doorpiece with flanking pilasters, a plain frieze, a block pediment, and a raised keystone. There is a blind window centered on the first floor, with single windows on both floors in the outer left and right bays, and three-light canted dormers above.
The rear elevation features a decorative cast-iron balustraded stair leading to the upper flat, with a single opening in the central bay that has an opaque-glazed fanlight. There is also a single window on the first floor in the outer right bay and single windows on both floors in the outer left bay.
The ground floor has 2-pane timber sash and case glazing, while the upper floor has replacement glazing. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, featuring raised skews, a corniced apex stack to the north, a coped apex stack to the south, and various circular cans.
The boundary wall along Ardbeg Road is a part-demolished random rubble wall.
