Description
53 Ardbeg Road is a symmetrical, two-storey house with an attic, built in the earlier to mid 19th century, featuring plain classical style. The house has three bays and is accessed from both the front and rear, with a full-height bowed stair tower located at the rear. The exterior is constructed from harl pointed rubble sandstone with painted margins and strip quoins. It has a raised base course and corniced eaves, along with tooled rubble quoins and tooled long and short rubble surrounds around the openings, which include projecting cills and a painted pilastered doorpiece. There is also a single-storey, single-bay outbuilding to the north, made of pitched harl-pointed rubble that is whitewashed at the front.
On the east (entrance) elevation, there is a two-leaf timber door at the centre of the ground floor, topped by a quadripartite fanlight and a corniced doorpiece with flanking pilasters, a plain frieze, a block pediment, and a raised keystone. The remaining bays are regularly fenestrated on both floors, with three-light canted dormers in the outer left and right bays.
The west (rear) elevation features a stair window at the first floor, located in the projecting tower, along with replacement doors at the ground level to the north and south. There are small single windows flanking the tower on both floors in the penultimate bay to the outer right, and single windows on both floors in the outer left and right bays, with box-dormers aligned above.
The glazing is predominantly replacement. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, has raised stone skews, and slate-hung dormers. There is a corniced sandstone apex stack to the south and a coped rendered apex stack to the north.
The interior was not seen in 1996.
The front elevation of the outbuilding features a blind window centred beneath the apex, a corrugated-iron roof, and raised skews.
The boundary wall consists of a low coped whitewashed rubble wall along Ardbeg Road, with a modern cast-iron pedestrian entry gate. There are whitewashed obelisk-style piers on the outer left and right, each topped with pyramidal caps.
