Description
25 Glasgow Street in Helensburgh is a two-storey, asymmetrical Free Style villa designed by Robert Wemyss in 1898. The building features a ground floor made of stugged red sandstone rubble, while the first floor and the service wing are harled. It is adorned with cream sandstone ashlar dressings, long and short quoins, and corbelled detailing at the first floor. The windows have chamfered reveals and are made of ashlar with mullions. The eaves are wide and overhanging.
On the east elevation facing Glasgow Street, there is a semi-circular doorway located off-centre to the right, complete with a hoodmould that has carved label stops. The entrance includes a boarded door and a half-glazed vestibule door featuring lead-pane glazing and stained glass. To the right of the doorway is a small window, and further right is another window. Above the entrance, there is a stepped tripartite stone-traceried stair window with pointed-arch lights. A corbel course steps to the left of the doorway, leading to a full-height advanced chimney with a tall corniced wallhead stack that breaks the eaves. There is also a small semi-circular arched window to the outer left at ground level. The service block, which is slightly recessed to the outer right, is a single storey and attic structure that is harled and features a 3-light window in the centre and another window to the left. Above, there is a gabled 3-light dormer with a round-arched light in the centre and a flat-roofed dormer to the left.
The south elevation, which faces the garden, has a tripartite bow window to the right and a recessed bay in the centre with a narrow round-arched window flanked by heavy consoles that support a corbelled course above. To the outer left, there is an advanced squared tripartite window that wraps around the angle, accompanied by a bipartite window on the return. At the first floor, there are two pedimented Venetian windows that break the eaves.
On the west elevation, there is a bipartite window positioned off-centre to the left and an advanced bipartite window to the outer right. A tall stepped wallhead stack breaks the eaves at the centre, with small 2-light windows located below the eaves on both the right and left sides. There is also a 2-light window breaking the eaves on the return to the left. The service wing is recessed to the outer left. Most of the windows are sash and case, featuring plate glass in the lower sashes, 9-pane upper sashes, and small-pane glazing in the casement windows of the dormers. The roof is covered with grey/purple slate and has harled coped stacks.
