Description

The detached classroom at Murroes Primary School, designed by Mr. Salmond in 1875-6, is a single-storey, rectangular-plan building originally consisting of 5 bays. It was later extended to form a 10-bay, near-symmetrical structure with additional bays to the east and west. The building is constructed of rubble with stugged and margined ashlar dressings and features a slate roof, while the later bays are rendered and lined. It has single bi-partite and tripartite windows with chamfered cills and 12-lying-pane top-hopper glazing, some of which include casements below. Decorative elements include bargeboards, exposed tiles, and posts at the gables, topped with decorative cast-iron finials.

On the south elevation, the original 5 bays are centrally located, with a symmetrical design and a slightly advanced gable featuring a tripartite window. There are single and bipartite windows to the left and right. An addition to the left has a slightly advanced gable with tripartite windows, a boarded door with a fanlight to the right, and a single window to the left. There are also slightly lower and recessed entrance porches at both the far left and right, each with a boarded door and astragalled fanlight. The outer left and right bays are slightly lower and recessed, each containing 2 windows, with a window on the left return gable.

The east gable has 2 windows, with a bipartite window in the flat-roofed bay to the right. The north elevation features the original building to the left, a gabled entrance porch at the center with a boarded door, 2 windows to the left, and a window to the right. A later heating chamber is advanced to the far right, with an addition to the right that includes a door at the center and 2 windows on either side.

The interior was not seen.

There is a single-storey detached classroom to the north, built of snecked rubble with a piended slate roof. It has a central door flanked by bipartite windows and a ridge ventilator. To the west is a playshed made of snecked and random rubble, also with a piended slate roof, featuring a door, 2 windows, and a 3-bay play area with flagstone paving supported by 2 cast-iron columns. Another playshed to the east has a 3-bay play area supported by 2 steel columns. The north wall of these buildings forms the northern boundary wall.

A rubble boundary wall runs along the north and partly along the south, east, and west sides.
