Description

This building is a school located in Fowlis, originally constructed in the earlier to mid-19th century and extended in 1888. It is a single-storey, rectangular-plan structure that has been made T-shaped by the addition of classroom 1 to 5, with lower cloakroom blocks in the re-entrants. The original building is made of stugged rubble, while the additions feature stugged and snecked rubble with stugged and margined quoins, topped with a slate roof. The additions have a base course, and the windows are sash and case, with 4-over-6 panes for the classroom tripartites and 2-over-4 panes for the cloakroom singles. The dressings are stugged and margined with chamfered cills. The building has deep eaves with exposed purlin and rafter ends, moulded bargeboards, and an exposed kingpost and collar at the south gable, along with small ball finials featuring elongated pinnacles and corniced stacks.

On the east elevation, the gable to the right is a modified original building with a tripartite window. There is a door to the bay at the left re-entrant and another door leading to a lean-to at the far right. The west elevation is a mirror image of the east elevation. The south gable features a central gable with a tripartite window and a single window in the lower, slightly recessed flanking bays. The north gable has a full-width lean-to with a central stack rising through the eaves to the main wall.

Inside, there is a boarded dado and original chimneypieces. There is also a timber playshed with a corrugated pentice roof and a small rubble-built WC block located to the west of the playshed. The property is enclosed by a rubble boundary wall to the west, with the northern boundary wall constructed in the 1980s, and a cast-iron and steel fence to the east.
