Description

West and St Columba's Parish Church, located on Panmure Street in Brechin, was built in 1856 by architects J. W. H. and J. M. Hay from Liverpool, with a hall added in 1897 by T. M. Cappon. The church features a mid-Decorated style with curvilinear tracery and a sophisticated body made of random rubble, while the tower is constructed of coursed rubble.

The church has a tall two-light window that rises into a gablet, a projecting porch, and four two-light windows on the buttressed flank elevation facing Southesk Street. The south-west flank is similar, with five two-light windows, the one nearest the tower also rising into a gablet. It has a high kerb roof covered with large slates.

The sturdy tower is supported by diagonal buttresses and topped with a stone spire that has an unusual broad shape rising from the belfry stage. The elaborate doorway features head label stops and a cusped inner order, with a four-light window above it and a two-light window at the belfry stage. There are lower lucarnes with steep gabled two lights and tiny gablets above.

The hall is set back in an open court to the west, built of snecked rubble, and has a four-light geometric window in its south gable. The roof is slated with bracketed eaves and red ridge tiles, along with a fleche and weathercock. Inside, the church has a single-span design with an interesting open roof.
