Description
St John's Episcopal Church, located at 71 East High Street in Forfar, was designed by Sir R. Rowand Anderson and constructed between 1879 and 1881. This early pointed style building is made of red rubble with yellow sandstone dressings and is oriented north-south. It features an unfinished southwest tower that was intended to have a broach spire. The church has a 90-foot long nave with five bays and a four-bay west aisle that is lined with brick. The chancel measures 43 feet and includes a west organ chamber that is also brick-lined and banded with marble. Inside, there are three seat sedilia, high-quality furnishings, and decorative panelling, along with a redecoration of the roof completed by Sir Matthew Ochterlony in the late 1940s.
