Description
Strathmore Estates Offices and Gatepiers, located at 20 Dundee Road in Glamis, dates from around 1830 and has been altered over time. The building is a single-storey, four-bay lodge house constructed from squared and snecked rubble, with some Aberdeen bond, and features droved ashlar quoins and raised margins.
The southwest elevation, which is the principal facade, has four windows that are evenly spaced, with the first and third bays slightly projecting. The northeast elevation includes a bay to the left of the center featuring a panelled timber door with a two-pane fanlight and flanking windows, along with two additional windows to the right and one further window to the outer left. The southeast elevation has a boarded timber door with a two-part fanlight at the center and an adjacent window to the right. The northwest elevation features two closely set windows to the right of the center.
The windows predominantly have a 12-pane glazing pattern, with some having four panes, all in timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks topped with polygonal cans, along with deeply overhanging eaves.
Inside, the lodge has plain cornicing, some fluted-pilaster architraves, and a Tudor-arched stone fireplace located in the factor's office.
An ancillary structure, which was formerly a stable and hayloft, is built from rubble with droved ashlar quoins and has a slated roof. The southeast elevation of this structure features a boarded timber door at the center bay flanked by round-headed windows, with further timber doors (converted stable) at the outer bays. The southwest elevation has a timber hayloft door in the gable head, while the northwest elevation includes a boarded timber door to the outer right. The northeast elevation has a window to the outer left and a coped ashlar gablehead stack.
The gatepiers are square-section, coped, and made of droved ashlar.
