196-198 High Street, Montrose

196-198 High Street in Montrose is an 18th century tenement with a 19th century shopfront at the ground level. The building is three stories high and has four bays, forming part of an irregular terrace. The exterior is harled with a cornice above the ground floor and plain margins.

On the principal elevation, the bays are separated by pilasters at the ground level. To the left, there is a pend entrance, and to the right, a shopfront features a central panelled entrance door flanked by plate glass windows and low stall risers covered with green glazed tiles. A canopy is positioned above the cornice. The first and second floors have regular window arrangements.

The south elevation is adjacent to 202-204 High Street, while the north elevation is next to 192-194 High Street.

The west elevation includes a round-arched pend entrance on the right at the ground level, with a blocked doorway and opening to the left within the pend. Above the pend, there is a single bay with windows on both the first and second floors. To the left, 200 High Street is located in close proximity.

The first-floor windows at the front are timber sash and case, while the second-floor windows have been replaced. The rear features 16-pane timber sash and case windows on the first floor. The roof is pitched with grey slate, and there is a stone skew on the south side. A rendered gablehead stack is also present on the south. The interior was not seen in 1997.
