Description

This is a United Free Church, built in 1861 in a stylized Gothic architectural style. The church is asymmetrical in design, with pointed-arch windows, a multi-gabled roofline, and a square corner tower. The front facade is constructed with stugged sandstone ashlar, while the sides and rear feature squared and snecked stone with ashlar dressings. Chamfered margins and battered cills are also present.

The east elevation, facing Provost Johnston Road, features a modern addition. The principal entrance is located within the tower on the east side, featuring a pointed-arch doorway with splayed reveals and a hoodmould, together with a two-leaf panelled door with decorative wrought-iron hinges and furniture. Above the doorway is a window with three trefoil lights. To the left of the tower is a large gable end with a rectangular window at ground level, featuring four pointed-arch, cusped lights. Above this window is a circular window set within a pointed arch, which contains seven quatrefoil lights within a larger outer circle of three circular lights. A single-story, single-pitch section is positioned to the far left, containing a single window with a cusped head.

The south elevation showcases the tower to the left, with a window above the ground floor and a square window above, displaying geometrical floreate tracery. A door is set offset to the right. To the right is a gable end with a three-light pointed-arch window featuring intersecting tracery. Two pitched roof sections lead to another gable end with a shallow-arched window with stone mullions. The window is tripartite, along with three plain tripartite windows, and a door. A modern, flat-roofed addition, dry-dashed in appearance, is situated on the right side.

The north elevation has a door set within a pitched roof section, and to the left a three-light pointed-arch window featuring Y-tracery. A shallow-arched, stone-mullioned tripartite window is also within a pitched roof section. A section is set back, displaying a three-light pointed-arch window with intersecting tracery high in the wall, and a blank gable end to the left. Another modern addition is present on the left.

The church’s interior features a gallery to the west, with carved, fluted panels and a modern glazed timber screen partition beneath. Geometric patterned stained glass is found in the chancel windows and the west window, while plain leaded lights are present in the nave. The organ pipes are a later addition to the chancel. The roof consists of a simple, exposed timber construction with corbelled wall posts. A new pulpit was installed in 1947. The church has grey slate roofs and a spire.

Boundary walls, gate piers, and railings are located around the site. A stugged and coped wall runs along the west and north boundaries, with wrought-iron railings and gates to the west, with square-section gate piers. A harled wall is on the south boundary.
