Description
The Public Library at 10 St Ninian's Square in Brechin was designed by J Graham Fairley and completed in 1892. This building showcases a Victorian Renaissance style with influences from French and American architecture. It is primarily a single-storey structure, featuring a two-storey and attic corner pavilion.
The library wing consists of four bays, with the left bay featuring a wide-arched entrance that has a recessed door. To the right, there are three four-light mullioned and transomed windows, which have arched features at the two central lights. The roof is slated, with deep plain parapets, an ogee-roofed ventilator, and an aedicular pediment gable above the right-hand bay.
The corner pavilion to the left of the entrance is two storeys high and includes a custodian's house, which is accessed through a two-storey semi-octagonal porch that has a pedimented doorpiece on the west elevation. The south front of the building has two two-light mullioned and double transomed windows on the ground floor, while the first floor features three windows—two of which are pedimented, and the centre window is arched with a key block and a small corbelled balcony. Above, there is a shaped pedimented dormer in the tall pavilion roof, along with a prominent stack on the west flank that includes a pedimented panel.
