Description
These are probably late 18th century doocots or early hen-houses, located northwest of the farmhouse at Fetterletter. They are circular structures built with rubble walls, which have been harled (rendered) and incorporate rat-courses. The roofs are conical and covered with felt tiles, although some remnants of the original thatch remain. These buildings are notable as they represent one of a small number of traditional buildings in Scotland retaining fragments of thatched roofing. A 2016 survey by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) identified approximately 200 buildings with thatched roofs across Scotland, primarily in small rural communities. These thatched buildings are valuable as they demonstrate traditional building methods and materials, providing insight into earlier ways of life and traditional skills. The listing record was revised in 2021 following a review of thatched buildings.
