Description
These are probably late 18th century structures, likely built as dovecots or early hen-houses. They are circular in plan and constructed with rubble walls overlaid with harling, incorporating rat-courses. The roofs are conical, covered with felt tiles, though remnants of original thatch remain. These structures are significant as they represent a small number of traditional Scottish buildings retaining thatched elements; a 2016 survey by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings identified approximately 200 such buildings across Scotland, often reflecting distinctive local building methods and materials. Their survival helps to illustrate traditional skills and earlier ways of life. The listing record was revised in 2021 as part of a review of thatched buildings. The structures are located northwest of the farmhouse at Fetterletter.
