Description

St Peter’s Church is a church dating from 1808. It is a four-window building constructed of rubble with cherry pointing and granite dressings, with margins at the corners. The centre of the west gable projects, featuring curved skews to a double arch bellcote topped with a spirelet. A platformed crown to the roof has a three-pinnacle pediment at the apex of the east gable. The church was repaired by James Henderson in 1863 following storm damage.

The interior was completely remodelled, including the addition of a chancel and a Leith-Hay pew designed by A. Marshall Mackenzie in 1903. The east window is a work by Louis Comfort Tiffany of New York. Within the east end, three symbol stones and an interlaced shaft from a cross slab are set into the wall. A large Gothic memorial on the south wall commemorates Sir William Gordon (+1816) and includes a marble bas-relief of a phoenix, alongside simpler neo-Greek monuments to the Leslies of Rothie. Two wooden panels bear dates of 1603 and 1671. The church contains a bell from 1609 and another dated 1809. The church remains in ecclesiastical use.

Some splayed masonry, possibly from the mediaeval church or the priory located in the outbuildings of Bridgend, has been incorporated into the structure.

Records, contract books, and illustrations relating to the church prior to 1903 alterations are held at Stirling, Fyvie Castle.
