Description
The churchyard surrounding St Peter’s Church dates primarily from the 17th century onwards. The boundary is defined by a rubble-stone retaining wall with steps leading up to the church. Numerous grave slabs are present, including monuments associated with the Gordons of Gight family. A 1673 grave slab, originally belonging to Agnes Smith of Mill of Tifty, is now incorporated into a memorial dated 1859; the earlier slab is a replica. A significant memorial, the Leith Hay Memorial, is constructed from red granite and displays early Renaissance detailing. This memorial was designed by A.A. Marshall Mackenzie and dates from 1901-2. The churchyard’s listing reflects its group value and applies to both its interior and exterior features. The listing specifically excludes the modern cemetery.
