Description

24 Market Square is a tall, two-storey and attic, three-bay terraced shop with a dwelling above, built in 1882. It is designed in an earlier 19th century traditional style and is situated on a prominent corner site. The building features ashlar stonework, with squared and snecked rubble on the sides and some Aberdeen bond. The base, first-floor cill, and eaves courses extend to the elevation facing Margaret Street.

The principal elevation is symmetrical, with a central shop door at ground level, which has a dentilled and corniced bracketed fascia above. There are three windows on the first floor and two polygonal-roofed canted dormer windows above the outer bays.

The elevation facing Margaret Street has a broad gabled design, featuring a timber door with a deep plate glass fanlight to the right at ground level, and two shop windows to the left under the fascia. There are two additional windows on the first floor, with the right window etched with decorative coloured margins. A blind bracketed segmental-headed niche in the gablehead is dated '1882'.

The building has a 4-pane glazing pattern in the timber sash and case windows above ground level, and a 6-pane margined window. It is topped with grey slates and has coped ashlar stacks with a full complement of polygonal cans, along with ashlar-coped skews that feature moulded skewputts.
