Description
Mounthooley Dovecot, dated 1800, is a tall dovecot with chamfered angles that create an octagonal shape. It features harl pointed rubble with tooled granite ashlar dressings and margins, as well as heavy boulder footings. The long elevations on the north, south, east, and west sides include a doorway on the west side and an oval oculus on the east, west, and south elevations above a continuous alighting ledge. The wallhead is slightly corbelled and crenellated, with each of the twelve merlons topped by a ball finial. The wallhead also masks a pyramidal slate roof.
Inside, the dovecot is lined full-height with approximately 300 brick nesting boxes, each box having a base made of brick slabs. A tall potence ladder remains, although some rungs are missing.
