Description
The Market Arms, located at 5 High Shore in Banff, is likely an 18th-century building that incorporates earlier elements. It is a two-storey structure with an attic and features four bays, along with a rear wing. The exterior is harled with painted ashlar margins, presenting an irregular frontage. The building has a single bay on the extreme left (south) and paired bays on the extreme right (north). A segmental-headed archway leads to the rear and the New Market. There are doorways on both sides of the arch, and three dormers break the wallhead beneath catslides. The windows are made of timber sash and case, featuring plate glass and four-pane glazing. The building has coped end stacks, which have been renewed on the north side, and it is topped with slate roofs. A plaque at the rear displays a human mask and is dated 1585.
