Description

The building known as Garden Walls at Ingle Neuk, 6 Water Path in Banff dates from the later 17th century. It is a two-storey house with a dormerless attic, featuring a five-bay west garden front and an irregular three-bay east entrance front, forming part of an L-plan range with No 3 Waterpath. The exterior is constructed of harled rubble with painted chamfered margins. It has a wide doorway with double-leaf panelled doors and irregularly placed windows, including some small ones. The garden elevation has larger windows and a doorway. The windows are timber sash and case with varied glazing.

The north gable facing the street has a crowstepped design, with a coped end stack at the apex and a massive harled rubble square stack at the south, which serves the kitchen hearth. The roof is slate.

Inside, the building features a panelled parlour with a panelled corner cupboard and large square raised and fielded panels. There is a sandstone ashlar hearth from around 1700, typical of Banffshire and Aberdeenshire. The staircase has no balustrade. The kitchen has exposed beams and a deep recessed inglenook framed by a segmental-headed hearth.

The garden walls are made of rubble and have been heightened with brick, providing a garden entrance from Waterpath. Additionally, there is a small square brick summerhouse from the 19th century, topped with a slated roof.
