Description

Fordoun Schoolhouse in Auchenblae is a Tudor-style villa built around 1850. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure with upper breaking eaves and an L-plan layout. At the rear, there is a two-storey, rectangular-plan wing added around 2002 by George Douglas from Aberdeen, designed to match the original style. The building is set within private garden grounds and features cherry-caulked red sandstone with tooled ashlar quoins and tabbed window margins, while the rear is harled. It has a base course, shouldered gablet dormerheads, and gables with angled skews and skewputts, along with chamfered arrises. The central entrance door is accompanied by a plain fanlight.

The south elevation, which is the principal facade, has a slightly advanced gable on the right with an arrowslit at the apex. The east elevation features a slightly advanced gable on the left with carved finials on the original dormerheads. The west elevation includes a later window on the ground floor of the right gable.

Most of the windows are replacement timber sash and case with 8-pane glazing. The main entrance has a replacement panelled timber door. The roof is pitched and covered with grey slates, featuring coped and shouldered ashlar wallhead stacks with circular clay cans, along with later aluminium rainwater goods.

Inside, as seen in 2012, the principal rooms are arranged around a central hall with a timber dog-leg staircase, although some interior remodelling has occurred. The entrance hall has a moulded cornice, and the principal rooms have a reinstated moulded cornice. Working window shutters and predominantly panelled timber doors are also present.

The property is enclosed by rubble boundary walls topped with semicircular rubble copes, and square ashlar gatepiers with pyramidal caps mark the entrance.
