Fern Ler, The Old Schoolhouse, Johnshaven

This is a terrace of buildings comprising a former school room, school house, and two cottages, constructed in two phases. The two two-storey, three-bay cottages at the eastern end likely date to around 1850. The school rooms and school house were built in 1854.

The buildings are harled, with contrasting long and short dressed stone detailing and slate roofs. Chimneys are corniced, with a more elaborate design at the western end. The schoolhouse has two canted dormers to the attic space. The westernmost building, the school house, has a central door and flanking bipartites, which may have been inserted around 1870. A lower, contemporary lean-to has been added to the western gable.

The former school room projects centrally within the terrace. It features a door on the left side and a gabled projection with a multi-pane sash and case window at ground level, as well as a smaller window in the gablehead. Modern four-pane glazing is present at Fernlea.
