Description
This is an earlier 19th century warehouse located on a sloping site in Johnshaven, adapted later in the 19th century for use as a fish curing house. A lower timber-framed splittering shed adjoins the main building to the southeast. The warehouse is constructed of coursed red sandstone rubble.
The northeast elevation, which faces the yard, has three ground-floor entrances and a first-floor hoist door that has been altered into a window. The southwest rear elevation features three windows added at a later date. The southeast elevation houses the late 19th-century splittering shed, a single-story structure with timber framing and walls of timber boarding between timber posts, with some more recent blockwork sections. It has a piended slate roof. The northwest elevation shows a large blocked gable door at a higher level, leading onto the street, and a loosely fitting pantiled roof with overlapping stone skews to the east gable, and a piend to the west.
Inside the warehouse, timber spars are present for suspending fish, along with two brick and stone cross-walls, one of which has been reduced to a pier supporting a lengthwise beam. Coped stone boundary walls are also present.
The building was likely used as a flax warehouse or a granary over a stable, or perhaps both at different times, before being converted for fish processing during the herring boom. The structure appears on the 1863 First Edition Ordnance Survey map.
