School Room And Cottages, The Old School House, Seaview Terrace, Johnshaven

The Old School House and associated cottages form a terrace of buildings in Johnshaven, comprising a former school room, school house, and two cottages constructed in two phases. The two 2-storey, 3-bay cottages at the eastern end of the terrace likely date to around 1850. The school room and school house were then built in 1854. The buildings are all single-storey, except for the school house, which has two canted dormers providing attic space. The walls are harled, with contrasting long and short dressings, and the roofs are slate. Corniced stacks are present, with a more elaborate stack at the western end. The westernmost school house has a central door, with what are likely later bipartites flanking it, probably inserted around 1870. A lower, contemporary lean-to adjoins the western gable.

The former school room projects from the centre of the terrace, with a door on its left side. A gabled projection features a finial and a multi-pane sash and case window on the ground floor, and a smaller window in the gablehead. Modern glazing has been introduced at Fernlea.
