Kisters Cottage, The Old School House, Johnshaven

Kisters Cottage, also known as The Old School House, is a terrace building comprised of a former school room and school house, with two cottages attached, constructed in two phases. The two two-storey, three-bay cottages located at the eastern end likely date to around 1850. The school room and school house were built in 1854.

The buildings are harled with long and short dressings, and have slate roofs. They feature corniced stacks, with a more elaborate design on the westernmost stack. The schoolhouse has two canted dormers to the attic space. The westernmost house has a central door, flanked by bipartites, which were likely inserted around 1870. A lower, contemporary lean-to extends from the western gable. The former school room projects centrally along the terrace, with a door to the left. A finialled gabled projection features a multi-pane sash and case window at ground level, with a smaller window in the gablehead. Fernlea, one of the cottages, has modern four-pane glazing.
