Description
Gamrie Church, designed by William Robertson from Elgin, was built between 1829 and 1830. It is a large rectangular church featuring a four-bay south elevation, with harled walls and ashlar margins and dressings.
The south elevation is illuminated by four substantial shallow Tudor arched windows, which have moulded wooden transoms and mullions, along with pointed-headed detailing in the upper lights. These windows are fitted with multi-pane glazing. The rear elevation has two similar windows in the center, flanked by blocked window recesses, with a small later vestry window at the left base. Each gable has a small Tudor arched two-light gallery window, also with multi-pane glazing.
At both the east and west gables, there are projecting gabled porches, each containing a window. The west gable apex features a finialled bellcote with Gothic detailing, and there is a later 19th-century cast-iron weathervane on the east gable.
A small single-storey wing extends from the rear of the church.
Inside, the church has a well-lit galleried interior with a five-sided gallery that has a panelled front supported by cluster columns. The demi-octagonal pulpit does not have a sounding board. Above each main entrance door, there are shaped fanlights with Gothic intersecting glazing. Some later partitioning has been added below the gallery to create a vestry and meeting room.
The burial ground surrounding the church is enclosed by large rubble walls. The main entrance is flanked by plain square tooled ashlar gatepiers topped with shallow pyramidal caps. Low coped flanking quadrants feature decorative cast-iron railings dating from around 1900, along with a matching pair of carriage gates.
