Description

Banff Harbour, built between 1770 and 1775 by John Smeaton, features alterations and additions made by Thomas Telford in 1816, along with subsequent modifications. In 2006, dredging was carried out by Morrison Construction, and a pontoon system was installed by Solent Marine. The harbour is triangular in shape, consisting of one L-plan pier and one straight pier, which are divided internally by two straight piers that create three basins. The structure is primarily built with large vertical squared rubble walling, with some later concrete work.

Additionally, there is a strategically located camouflaged single chamber pillbox incorporated into the retaining wall of the steeply sloping ground to the west of the Quayside, overlooking the harbour. This pillbox is constructed of snecked rubble with a concrete cap and features two splayed horizontal firing loops and a narrow blocked doorway.
