Description
The building is a former police station located on High Shore in Banff, designed by David Rhind around 1865. It is a three-storey, five-bay Italianate structure that was originally a bank, featuring single-storey, two-bay wings that are slightly set back from the main frontage. The exterior is constructed from squared dark local whinstone, accented with ornate contrasting ashlar sandstone dressings. The central entrance is located beneath a heavy consoled balustraded balcony that fronts the first-floor center window. The ground floor windows have cornices, while the first-floor fenestration is consoled and corniced, with small second-floor windows, all featuring moulded jambs and plate glass timber sash and case glazing.
The building has quoins, a deep modillioned cornice below a blocking course, which is adorned at intervals with urn and ball finials. The roof is slate, and there are corniced end and ridge stacks.
Inside, there is a wide staircase with cast-iron barley-sugar twist balusters, although the interior has been significantly altered to accommodate its use as a police station.
The property is enclosed by rubble and brick garden walls that form an L-shaped rear garden.
