Description

This building, located at 53, 55, and 57 Victoria Road in Torry, Aberdeen, is a corner tenement constructed around 1890-1900 in the Edwardian Baroque style. It features a broad curved corner and an interesting curvilinear-gabled roofline. The structure is three stories tall with an attic, comprising three window bays at the curved corner, five return bays (two and three) on Sinclair Road, and three on Victoria Road.

The exterior is made of rough-hewn squared granite with contrasting lighter polished ashlar dressings, including a cill band on the second floor, an eaves band, and a cornice. On the ground floor, there are arched and keyblocked entrances at the center of the three-bay block on Victoria Road and to the right of the Sinclair Road elevation. Wide shop-window bays are situated between these entrances, divided by polished ashlar consoled pilastrade. The original timber and masonry cornicing has survived, along with some of the original glazing pattern, particularly in the corner bays, which feature mullioned and transomed (eight-pane) shop windows above a short timber basecourse. However, the glazing in the Victoria Road bays has been altered.

Most of the first-floor windows still retain their original plate glass sash and case glazing, while the second floor and attic have unfortunately been fitted with modern uPVC replacement glazing. The tall attic storey is topped with a full cornice and features elaborate wallhead stacks and shaped gables over the corner bays. The central gable has a finial and a glazed, keystoned oculus, with tall shaped gable-headed and finialled attic windows over the subsidiary elevations. A simple blocked balustered parapet links the dormer heads, and the building is capped with a slated mansard roof and end stacks. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1992.
