Hotel Metro, 17-19 Market Street, Aberdeen

Hotel Metro, located at 17-19 Market Street in Aberdeen, is a 2-storey, 5-bay classical building designed by Archibald Simpson and William Ramage in 1845. Originally a Mechanics' Institute, it features a distinctive central pedimented Doric-columned tripartite window. The exterior is constructed of grey granite ashlar, showcasing channelled rustication around the central advanced round-arched entrance. The building includes string courses, a black-painted frieze that reads 'METRO HOTEL & RESTAURANT', a dentilled cornice, and a blocking course. There is some round-arched arcading at the ground level, particularly at the public bar on the right, while the left side has an altered public bar front. The upper storey has tall window openings with cornices and Doric-pilastered architraves.

The upper storey features plate glass timber sash and case windows, while the ground level has non-traditional glazing. Gable stacks are present on the roof. The interior has not been fully inspected as of 2006 but is believed to have been modernised.
