Description

136-144 Union Street in Aberdeen is a former hotel designed by Archibald Simpson around 1817. The building is three stories tall and features a Classical style with six bays across the front and five bays along the side. It has an additional four lower stories on the east elevation facing Denburn Road. The ground floor along Union Street has been altered for shops.

The structure is made of grey granite ashlar, with rock-faced rubble on the lower four stories to the east. It includes a band course, a deep cornice, and a blocking course. The lower three stories on the east elevation have round-arched openings, with additional round-arched openings also present.

On the Union Street elevation, there is a consoled timber fascia above the shop fronts. The shop on the far right features a pilastered entrance porch and decorative tesserae tiled panels with animal and plant motifs.

The upper stories predominantly have plate glass timber sash and case windows, while the shop fronts also use plate glass. Some windows on the east elevation are multi-pane and 12-pane timber sash and case. The building has a shallow mansard roof covered with grey slates, and there are central coped wallhead stacks, which are panelled to the south with window openings to the east and west.
