Description
Union Bridge in Aberdeen is a viaduct that carries Union Street from Adelphi to Diamond Street. It was designed by Charles Abercrombie and others, constructed between 1800 and 1805, with significant widening work completed by William Dyack in 1905. The bridge features a single span segmental arch supported by tall, projecting, battered piers that have large central semicircular arched niches. The lower section of the abutments is made of coursed, tooled granite with deep channelled, rock-faced rustication, while the piers are finished with channelled ashlar. On the north side, there is a painted cast iron parapet with pierced panels, small columns, and alternating small leopard finials. Additionally, an open elliptical steel span arch was added to the north side between 1905 and 1908. The bridge underwent further alterations to the south in 1964.
