The Arches, Palmerston Road, Aberdeen

The Arches on Palmerston Road in Aberdeen is a rough-faced, coursed granite viaduct built around 1854, connecting Ferryhill to Guild Street Station. It features two painted metal bridges located beneath the viaduct at Palmerston Place and Riverside Drive. The piers exhibit channelled rustication, and the inside returns are tiled with round-arched doorways beneath the bridges. Latticed parapets are supported by pierced ironwork brackets, with advanced, stepped-up finely finished terminating blocks on either side, topped with dentil mouldings. The viaduct has 14 round-arched openings with painted brick arch-rings, including 10 to the southeast, 11 to the northeast, and 2 to the northwest, many of which have been infilled with retail units. There are also 11 open brick-lined arches and 2 infilled arches to the southwest. The parapet features advanced, stepped-up finely finished dividing blocks, also coped with dentil mouldings. The walls on the northeast and southeast sides are blank and sweep around.
