Description
The Railway Viaduct, built in 1849, is located on Kirkstall Road in Leeds. Designed by engineer Thomas Grainger for the Leeds and Thirsk Railway Company, the structure is made of rock-faced ashlar and features 21 segmental arches supported by large rusticated piers with moulded imposts. It has a moulded cornice and parapet. At the south end, the viaduct spans the Leeds and Liverpool Canal with a low elliptical arch that is rusticated and includes round-headed niches on the abutments. The viaduct also crosses Viaduct Road, Kirkstall Road, and the River Aire.
