Description
The West Leading Lighthouse, located on Sinclair Road in Torry, is a pair of mid-19th century cast iron leading lights situated about 240 metres apart, aligned from northeast to southwest. They were originally built in 1842 based on designs by harbour engineer James Abernethy and his cousin from Ferryhill Foundry, and were raised to a height of approximately 12 metres (40 feet) in 1886/87.
These tapering, octagonal towers are designed to resemble blocks of coursed ashlar masonry. Each tower features a splayed base, a recessed timber door with moulded panels, and a circular window. About halfway up the shafts, there are embossed plaques that read, "Erected by the Harbour Trustees 1842 - Thomas Blaikie Esq, Lord Provost. Alexander Hadden Esq, Master of Shore Works." The lanterns on top are partially glazed and have octagonal roof caps adorned with cast iron ball finials and wind vanes. They are equipped with remotely operated electric lighting. The southwest (inner) tower is built on a rubble masonry base that includes six steps.
The upper sections of the towers are made from vertically and horizontally jointed cast iron plates with bolted flanges, while the base sections are cast in one piece. The interiors have not been inspected as of 2019. A sectional drawing of the towers indicates a metal platform with ladder access and a fitted cupboard at the base of the lanterns.
