Description

This is a single-storey, two-bay vernacular house situated south of 16 Dernaroy Road in Killevy, Newry, County Armagh. Built between 1860 and 1879, it stands on the west side of Dernaroy Road, aligned north-south, and is accompanied by a similar building that forms an attractive group (reference HB16/15/039).

The house features a pitched roof covered in natural slate, with concrete skews and brick chimneys on each gable. A slightly advanced eaves course is visible, and there are no rainwater goods. The walls are whitewashed lime-rendered rubble stone. The principal, east-facing elevation has a central exposed box 2/2 sliding sash window with horns and a whitewashed granite cill to the left bay. The right bay incorporates a windbreak porch with a natural slate lean-to roof and a metal gutter, plus another window detailed similarly, although the cill is set below window level. A 1950s glazed timber door is situated on the front face. The left gable is blank, while the rear elevation presents an infilled window opening to the left.

An outbuilding abuts the right gable, featuring a pitched corrugated metal roof. The east elevation of this outbuilding has large, tongue-and-groove sheeted doors. A lower, narrower outbuilding adjoins the right gable of this one, leaving a blank exposed section. The rear elevation of the second outbuilding has a metal-framed top-hung casement window with obscured glass at the extreme right end. The outbuilding’s east face includes a pitched natural slate roof and a corrugated metal door at its left end, with a small top-hung 2x1 timber window located at the apex of the right gable. The rear elevation of this outbuilding is blank. Two small outbuildings are positioned to the front.

The property is enclosed from the road by a rubble stone wall with squared granite gate piers, topped with pyramidal copings and supporting a cast-iron gate.

Although a building is shown on Ordnance Survey maps from 1835 and 1861, it did not have the same ground plan as the present structure. Based on rateable values, the house likely appeared around 1862.
