Description

A bridge dating from around 1850, it possesses architectural interest and is historically associated with Sir John Macneill and William Dargan, considered the "father" of Irish railways. The bridge is part of a group of rail-related structures and is linked to the nearby railway station (HB16/15/022), whose platforms extend under the bridge's arch.

The bridge, number 169, carries a single lane road over the double-track Dublin-Belfast railway line, located west of the Dundalk Road. It features a single, semi-elliptical span constructed from coarsely-dressed and irregularly laid granodiorite blocks. The abutments have tooled edges and rusticated voussoirs, with a finely dressed and chamfered string course running through the arch at spring level and just above the crown, as well as similarly detailed, slightly advanced parapet copings. Shallow buttresses are present on the approach walls, also with tooled edges. The splayed wing walls are coped and terminate with capped squared piers. The road surface is slightly humped where it crosses the bridge and bends sharply southwest.

The bridge was constructed around 1850 by the Dublin and Belfast Junction Railway Company, based on designs by their chief engineer, Sir John Macneill, with William Dargan overseeing construction. This section of the railway line, between Killeen and Dundalk, opened in 1850, and, with the subsequent completion of the Craigmore Viaduct in 1852, the entire line between Dublin and Belfast became fully operational.
